THE LORD’S PRAYER Part 4 (HALLOWED BE THY NAME)

posted by David M Kijula in Christian Lesson, 06 November 2009

Matt 6:9-13

(9) After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

(10) Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

(11) Give us this day our daily bread.

(12) And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

(13) And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

As we continue with The Lord’s Prayer we come to another important statement of Hallowed be thy name. When the scriptures refer to a name, especially a name of God the meaning of the name gives us insights and knowledge of the characteristics and nature of a person or of God. Also there was a saying “ a person is only as good as his name “ which carries the idea of integrity and reliability. Your name and reputation went hand in hand. With some name’s or reputation by name you would know that individual was someone whose word you can trust or of another person whose words would be unreliable, or lies. When we come to a name of God it implies the highest of integrity and trustworthiness and represents a characteristic of His Divine nature and He reveals Himself to us by that name.

So the name of God, and there are many given to us, represents to us who He is to us at any given time and any given situation. So through these many names God reveals certain aspects of who He is to us. You may focus on one name of God or several names or you may use on name that has many applications.

Another part of The Lord’s prayer is the word HALLOWED.

The use of this word refers to make holy, separate, revere or reverence God as the Creator, the King, and Our Father. We are to reverence God and to worship Him and to give Him praise. As we humble ourselves in reverential worship because He is Holy we should also see that we need to embrace this characteristic in our lives because we have been commanded to be holy.

1 Peter 1:13-16

(13) Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

(14) As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

(15) But as he which hath called you is holy , so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;

(16) Because it is written, Be ye holy ; for I am holy .

As we pray and worship God by one of His names or consider the name as we pray you will find that there are many names given to God throughout the Bible. I remember seeing a title of a book referring to 365 Names of God. That is a lot of names, or characteristics of God. Let’s consider some of the names of God.

In the Old Testament God reveals His character, attributes and very nature through varies names He has revealed to us in scripture. Jehovah – Shalom “ The Lord Is Peace “, Jehovah – Jireh

The Lord Will Provide “, Jehovah – Rapha – “ The Lord Who Heals” are some of the names God has given to us. In the New Testament it says that Jesus shall be called Emmanuel, God with us.

Matt 1:23

Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us

Also as we praise the name of Jesus we are praising Him with all the attributes revealed in the Old Testament names being contained and revealed in the name of Jesus.

So we can focus on the Old Testament Names or we can sum it all up in the name of Jesus. We also have another New Testament Name revealed to us, Our Father. When we reverence and worship God according to these names we are Coming to God in reference to this part of His nature. As Jehovah Rapha we look to God, Our Father as our healer. We could also worship God with the name of Jesus at this point, a name that covers all the characteristics of the other names. Why is it so important to reverence God with an understanding to all the different names of God, or the name of Jesus which contains all the attributes of God, or the fullness of the Godhead.

Col 2:8-10

(8) Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

(9) For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

(10) And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved .

Eph 1:20-21

(20) Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,

(21) Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

Phil 2:9-11

(9) Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name :

(10) That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

(11) And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

John 14:7-10

(7) If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

(8) Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

(9) Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father ; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father ?

(10) Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

These scriptures should help you to see why we can see the attributes of the names of God in the Old Testament also contained in the name of Jesus. That is why we should worship or praise God continually. His name contains and represents all that God is to us, and His name represents all of His promises to us whatever our need may be.

When I pray “ Hallowed be thy name “ I reverence and worship God for all that His name represents to me, the fullness of God, my Father.

GOD LOVES YOU

If you haven’t made Jesus Christ your Lord and Saviour I would like to encourage you to do so. ( Romans 10:13 ) For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Pray this prayer God in heaven, I believe Jesus Christ is the son of God and that he died for my sin and was raised on the third day. I repent of my sins and receive Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. Lord Jesus come into my heart and make me a child of God. Thank You Lord. Amen. Note: All scripture references are from the King James Bible
