THE LORD’S PRAYER Part 6 (THY WILL BE DONE)

posted by David M Kijula in Christian Lesson, 20 November 2009

Matt 6:9-13

(9) After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

(10) Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

(11) Give us this day our daily bread.

(12) And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

(13) And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

THY WILL BE DONE seems like such an elusive phrase. I imagine all Christians have asked themselves what is God’s will generally and specifically what is God’s will for my life ? Another question would be how can I know what God’s will is ? As Jesus said, “ be of good cheer “ , you can know the will of God for you and you can walk with God in this.

John 16:33

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer ; I have overcome the world.

Jesus said in the world there would be tribulation but we can be of good cheer because He has overcome the world and by being in Him we can have peace. Having peace in Jesus is the will of God by being in Christ but do we really keep ourselves in Christ or do we keep ourselves more in the world ? Do we understand how to be in Christ and have His peace ? If we know the will of God and do His will we can be in peace. This was just one example of knowing God’s will and why in the Lord’s Prayer you would pray “ Thy Will Be Done “.

When we ask for God’s will to be done, we are asking God to perform His plan in our lives and the situations we face. It seems that when people pray they are asking for God to do their will in their lives or in the life of someone else they may be praying for. We all have desires, plans, goals or an idea of what we would like to see done, but God also has His plan for our lives and the situations we face. Instead of asking God to bless our mess ( our plans ) we need to pray for God’s plans and this is what happens when we pray “ Thy Will Be Done “.

Jer 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end .

When we pray “ Thy Will Be Done we “ we are praying as Jesus did in the mount of Olives, not my will but thine be done.

Luke 22:42

Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will , but thine, be done.

There are two ways of coming to know God’s will and you need to grow in both of them or have both ways working in your life to fully know the will of God.

The first part is what the scriptures say. These are the will of God to us and they give us God’s will in how to live, act, and be what God would have you to be. This is why we need to study the Word of God so that we can know His will and do it.

Rom 12:1-2

12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

(2) And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Eph 5:16-17

(16) Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

(17) Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

2 Tim 2:15

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

We are to renew are mind to the Word of God so that we can discern what the will of God is. As we fill our minds with the Word of God the Word brings revelation to us and shows us the way.

Ps 119:105

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet , and a light unto my path.

When we pray “ Thy Will Be Done “ we are asking God to perform His Word in and through us, so that the Word we have studied can bare fruit in us.

The second part of knowing the will of God is through the Holy Spirit or God giving you revelation of His will. Take for example that it’s God’s will for you to go to New York city. You can’t find New York city in the Bible, so you need a revelation from the Spirit of God.

Isa 48:17

Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.

Rom 8:14

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Acts 13:2-4

(2) As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

(3) And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

(4) So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.

When we pray “ Thy Will Be Done “ we are also asking for God to gives us the revelation we need to do His will. It is by revelation of the Word of God and by revelation by the Spirit of God that we come to know and understand God’s will and also begin to receive the empowering or the anointing to accomplish the will of God. When the will of God is revealed He will also provide the enabling to bring His will to pass, but many times people try to do the will of God before receiving the enabling. In the will of God there may also be a timing of God. So even with the revelation be aware of the timing of God.

In summary, when we pray “Thy Will Be Done” we are asking for three things. First we are asking for God’s plan and not our will be done. Secondly, we are asking for God to bring His Word that we have studied to bare fruit in us and to empower us according to His Word. Thirdly, we are asking for God to reveal to us His will by the Holy Spirit and how to proceed. As all three of these areas begin to work in us it is then that God’s will is being done in our lives. As we pray “ Thy Will Be Done “ it is a call to God to bring these three areas to pass in our lives and it is by praying “ Thy Will Be Done “ that we will increase in these things.

LORD NOT MY WILL, BUT THY WILL BE DONE

GOD LOVES YOU

If you haven’t made Jesus Christ your Lord and Saviour I would like to encourage you to do so. ( Romans 10:13 ) For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Pray this prayer God in heaven, I believe Jesus Christ is the son of God and that he died for my sin and was raised on the third day. I repent of my sins and receive Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. Lord Jesus come into my heart and make me a child of God. Thank You Lord. Amen. Note: All scripture references are from the King James Bible
